One of the pillars of the Indomitable Lions defence during the 1982 Spanish World Cup, Elie Onana Eloundou “exited the football pitch” last April 2, aged 67 after a prolonged illness.
The Sultan of Bamouns nicknamed him “Panka” (meaning warrior in the Bamoun dialect). Elie Onana was given that name for his timely defensive tackles during the World Cup where the Indomitable Lions didn’t concede any defeat. In1984, the Indomitable Lions lifted their first continental trophy in Abidjan, Ivory Coast with Elie in the denthough he didn’t play the final.
“Panka” retired in 1988 and switched to his first job as a prison guard. After his retirement, not much was heard about the former captain of Federal Sporting FC of Noun, player of Tonnerre and Canon of Yaounde respectively until the announcement of his death.
